The Anabolic Window Myth: What Timing Really Does

We literally profit from the anabolic window. It's still mostly a myth. Here's what the research says.

Full disclosure before the science: a meaningful share of our revenue is people sprinting from the squat rack to our counter because a coach once told them muscle evaporates at minute 31. We are the last business with an incentive to write this article. Here it is anyway.

Where the 30 minutes came from

Early studies did show better results when lifters ate protein right after training. The catch — exposed in the landmark meta-analysis of 23 trials by Aragon and Schoenfeld — is that the “eat immediately” groups were also simply eating more total protein per day. Match the totals, and the timing effect evaporates for both strength and size.

When timing still earns its keep

The myth has two survivors, and they’re legitimate:

  1. Fasted training. Hit the 6am session on an empty stomach and your body’s been without amino acids for 10+ hours — eating reasonably soon after genuinely matters more. (Miami’s dawn-patrol gym crowd, this is you.)
  2. The habit effect. If the post-gym smoothie is how your daily protein target actually gets hit, then the ritual is load-bearing — not because of the clock, but because of the consistency. A timing myth that causes a real habit is a useful myth.

What we’d tell you at the counter

Don’t sprint. Do show up. The evidence-based order is 20–30g of quality protein sometime in the hours around training — which is precisely why every protein smoothie here runs 24g of whey: PB Classic if you want oats and staying power, Chocolate PB if recovery should taste like dessert, Tropical Fusion if it’s 94°F outside (it is).

We went deeper on which blends fit which sessions in the post-workout smoothie guide — and on whether your protein should even be whey in whey vs plant.

The honest close

The anabolic window sells smoothies, and we just told you it’s mostly a myth. What’s not a myth: 24 grams, real fruit, and a counter six minutes from your gym. Walk, don’t run — or just order ahead.
